Scheduled Maintenance
Scheduled maintenance should be performed on your new motorcycle according to the manufacturers specifications. You will find these in the back of your Owner’s Manual. The manufacturer’s recommended maintenance, performed by a qualified mechanic, will insure that your motorcycle will last you a long time. The are services that are required for your high performance engine to work properly. Think about it, you have one of the most high performance engines on Earth is a very small package. The scheduled maintenance will include: oil changes, air filters, spark plugs, valve adjustments, drive shaft oil, fork oil, throttle adjustments, clutch adjustments, coolant changes, and much much more.
How much does it cost?
The first service on your motorcycle will be between $150 to $300 depending on what kind of motorcycle you have and whether or not your valves need to be adjusted. Other services will range from $80 to $400 depending on which service and what has to be done at that particular mileage. Check your owner’s manual or ask your local Service Manager to explain the different services.
Most dealerships will offer Pre paid Maintenance Programs that will decrease the cost of owning your motorcycle. See the Products section under Finance for more information on Pre Paid Maintenance Programs.
Can I do it myself?
Of course you can do some of it yourself. If you change your own oil, you must by a oil filter wrench, and you must use motorcycle oil specific to your motorcycle. Your local parts department should be able to help you get all the parts that you need. You can probably change your air filter, and your spark plugs after you get the appropriate spark plug wrench. If you are an avid do it your selfer, there is nothing wrong with doing some of the maintenance yourself, just ask your local service writer or service manager for some tips, be careful and enjoy yourself. But definitely bring it in to the dealership for your first service and all valve adjustments, etc. If you are not a trained mechanic, or just don’t have the time or tools to do the job properly, (which includes most of us), let your local dealer take care of your new pride and joy. Chances are you can’t do it any cheaper than a Pre Paid Maintenance Plan.
